28 Nov The #1 Cause of Stress and Anxiety
My wife’s family lives in the south suburbs of Chicago.
It takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes to get there.
No matter if we stop for a snack or get slowed by a little traffic, it always seems to take 3 hours and 15 minutes.
As I drive, I would calculate how long it would take depending on where we were currently…
“Let’s see, we’re at Exit 80 so that means it’ll be 2 hours.”
“Hmmm…we’re at the Michigan/Indiana border so we should be there in an hour.”
“We stopped for 10 minutes so what time will we get there now??”
I’d focus on the destination, and guess what would happen?
I’d get anxious, annoyed, or agitated if anything took me off course.
All the elements of overthinking.
I believe we all, at some point or another, focus on the destination without being present in the journey.
We want to skip the steps and process that’ll lead to success, but the process is what keeps us happy in the present.
This is an issue I see with health and fitness.
Whether you want to lose 20 pounds, get rid of pain, run a marathon, get a 6-pack, provide for your family…focusing on the steps that get you there is exponentially more important than constantly looking at the destination.
Comparing where you are now to where you want to be…
Overthinking your current situation….
Leading to stress and anxiety.
Once I stopped focusing on “getting there,” just accepted where I was at that point and kept driving, it made the trip MUCH more enjoyable and less stressful.
And I still get there…
…in 3 hours and 15 minutes.
